Troubleshooting Bank Statement Conversion Issues
While automated tools like StatementPro process native PDF statements smoothly, occasional formatting discrepancies can occur due to document protection or unusual PDF layouts. Here is how to fix the most common issues:
1. Password Protection Error
Symptom: The uploader reports that the PDF cannot be opened.
Fix: Financial institutions often protect PDF statements with passwords (such as your account number or zip code). Remove the password lock using Adobe Acrobat or your browser print utility before uploading.
2. Text Encoding Corruption (Garbled Characters)
Symptom: Extracted vendor text appears as random symbols (e.g., ``).
Fix: This occurs when a PDF uses custom embedded fonts without standard font mapping. Re-download the official PDF directly from your bank portal or print-to-PDF to re-encode the character layer.
3. Debit and Credit Column Inversion
Symptom: Deposits appear in the withdrawal column or vice versa.
Fix: In Excel, simply multiply the column by `-1` or swap column headers before importing data into your accounting software register.
